YVES RHAYE, biomorphic ceramic sculpture

Yves Rhaye (1936-1995) was a versatile Belgian artist, recognized as a painter, draftsman, graphic artist, sculptor, ceramicist and jewelry designer. His works, often inspired by nature, stand out with their futuristic forms, blending human and animal figures. Through his creations, Rhayé aimed to provoke questions and evoke a sense of mystery in the viewer. After studying interior architecture, sculpture and painting at the Ghent Academy under Robert Heylbroeck, Rhayé began his career as a designer in various ceramics industries. He trained in ceramics under Laurent Vandeweghe at the Perignem workshop in Beernem and at the Florizoone brickyard in Nieuwpoort.

From 1960, he was a member of the 'Cyanuur' and 'Fantasmagie' circles, and he established his studio in the Château de Voorde, near Ninove. Rhayé is best known for his anthropomorphic and biomorphic sculptures, where he fused plant and animal elements, transforming humanoid figures into fantastical, extraterrestrial creatures. His works, often crafted in terracotta or bronze, were typically finished with black and gold glazes. His creations were exhibited worldwide and are part of both museum and private collections. Rhayé was also elected a member of the International Academy of Ceramics in Genève.
